Q) What is Battery Electrolyte?
Battery Electrolyte is a liquid solution of water and sulfuric acid; typically about 35-40% sulfuric acid. It is a corrosive acid hazard that will burn the skin and eyes as well as damage clothing. Refer to a SDS before working around battery electrolyte. Always use appropriate personal safety wear.
Q) What do you mean by the statement Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules will neutralize and adsorb electrolyte?
Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules is a dry powder blend specifically formulated to neutralize and adsorb electrolyte spills. The product works in two steps:
1) Upon contact with electrolyte, the electrolyte is neutralized. "Neutralized" means the sulfuric acid is converted to water and sodium salt.
2) The water is then adsorbed. Only a dry powder is left to clean-up. The dry powder will be pH neutral. This is much easier to clean-up than a paste liquid. When used on sulfuric acid, this bi-product satisfies R.C.R.A. characterization as non-hazardous waste.
Q) What is the shelf life of Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules?
Products over five years old have been evaluated and found to be fully effective. We have been careful to package the product in quality plastic containers. This protects against contamination from the environment. Normal variations in moisture have not caused the product to "clump". Shelf life characteristics are very good even with partially used containers - if the cap is put back on after use. Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules will not "clump" like boxes of baking soda or bags of sodium bicarbonate.
Q) My battery room floor is contaminated with electrolyte in various places. Can I neutralize it with Neutralizing Cleaner?
Neutralizing Cleaner will work but clean-up will likely be a problem. Concrete is porous and the dye in Neutralizing Cleaner might be difficult to clean-up.
A Better Approach:
1) Locally treat any puddles of electrolyte with Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules
2) Sweep floor to remove dirt and debris.
3) Make a 10% solution of Neutralizing Concentrate and hot water (about 1/3 quart of Neutralizing Concentrate to 4 quarts of hot water).
4) Wet mop floor a few times.
5) Rinse mop very well.
6) Wet mop floor two or three times with hot water.
Q) How do I determine if I have applied enough Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules to an electrolyte spill?
In treating a spill with Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules, begin by forming a dike around the outer edge of the spill. {Booms work great to form a dike}. This will limit the contaminated area. Continue applying the product working toward the center of the spill. When all the liquid is covered, sufficient product has been applied. If liquid puddles reappear, simply add more Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules to those areas. Allow to sit for 3-5 minutes, and then sweep up with clean-up equipment provided in your acid spill kit.
Q) Why No Litmus Paper in Simply Safe Acid Spill Kits?
Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules & Neutralizing Granules, Non-Gassing are both formulated for 96% sulfuric acid spills. Battery electrolyte is approximately 35% sulfuric acid with the balance being water. This means both products have excess neutralizer when used on battery electrolyte. The product is limited by absorbing capability. We recommend the user to either product until all liquid is gone.
Both the Rapid Response Neutralizing Granules and Neutralizing Granules, Non-Gassing are pH neutral when manufactured. Competitive products are alkaline and can easily over-neutralize the spill. This means a corrosive acid spill can easily become a corrosive alkaline spill unless the amount of neutralizer applied is carefully monitored. Litmus paper is normally required for this.
When treating a spill, one objective is to absorb the liquid as rapidly as possible. With both products, the liquid is completely absorbed in seconds. For litmus paper to work, the residue must be a liquid. To use litmus paper, liquid would need to be added to the spill.
Should you wish to confirm the spill was neutralized, we would recommend spraying some Neutralizing Cleaner on the residue. The color indicator in this product will show red if the residue is acidic. If the residue is neutral, color of the product will remain orange.
